Training Beyond the Weights: My Methodology and Why It Matters

By Jeramie Auchterlonie
CEO & Founder of That’s Living Inc.

When I first stepped into a gym, I thought training was all about lifting heavy, sweating hard, and chasing numbers. Over the years, however, I discovered that real training is something much deeper; it’s a science, a discipline, a spiritual practice, and a way of life.

As the founder of That’s Living Inc., my personal training methodology is at the core of our brand. It’s not just about building strength in the gym; it’s about how that strength flows into everything I do as an entrepreneur, as a leader, and as a human being.

Science Meets Old-School Grit

I believe in blending the best of two worlds: science-based training and the old-school mentality of simply putting in the work.

From the science side, I lean on proven principles like progressive overload, hypertrophy-specific rep ranges, recovery cycles, and periodization. Training should never be random — it should be intentional, measurable, and adaptable. Evidence-based methods ensure that progress is real, sustainable, and safe.

But I also refuse to abandon that old-school spirit, the raw intensity of “banging weights,” the unapologetic drive to push limits, and the unpolished grind that makes training visceral. I call this hybrid approach structured intensity: every rep has a purpose, but every set demands heart.

It’s not just numbers in a logbook. It’s sweat on the floor.

The Spiritual Weight of Training

For me, training isn’t only physical — it’s spiritual. The gym is where I confront resistance, and not just the plates on a barbell. Resistance shows up in life: doubts, setbacks, the urge to quit. Training is my daily reminder that I can move through resistance, that I can carry more than I thought possible.

Every workout becomes a ritual. Breathing under a heavy squat is meditation. Locking out a deadlift is a prayer in motion. The iron teaches me presence, patience, humility, and gratitude.

That’s why I created That’s Living — because I wanted to share that truth. Training is more than muscle; it’s a lifestyle, it’s a community, and it’s a spiritual anchor in a world that pulls us in every direction.

Carrying Training into Everyday Life

My methodology doesn’t end when I rack the last set. The structure, discipline, and resilience I build under the barbell carry into everything else:

  • In business, I use the same principles of progressive overload to scale goals step by step.

  • In relationships, training teaches me patience and presence.

  • In personal growth, the hybrid of science and grit keeps me grounded yet hungry.

Training, at its core, is about transformation. The body is simply the starting point.

Why That’s Living

When I founded That’s Living Inc., it wasn’t just to make clothing. It was to create a movement — a community where the physical, mental, and spiritual come together. Every design we create, every journal entry we publish, every conversation we have is fueled by the same energy that drives my training: purposeful, disciplined, passionate, and unshakably real.

That’s Living isn’t just a brand. It’s proof that when you commit to your training — body, mind, and spirit — you’re not just building yourself. You’re building a life worth living.

So, here’s my challenge to you:
The next time you step into the gym, don’t just think about lifting weights. Think about lifting your life. Think about the person you’re becoming under the bar. Think about what it means to truly live.

Because in the end, training isn’t separate from life. Training is life. And that’s living.

I’d love to hear from you in the comments below! What principles do you follow when training, and why? Let’s start a conversation and learn from each other.
